Curriculum Intent

‘Sana mens in corpore sano: a healthy mind in a healthy body’

Now, more than ever, we know that physical activity matters. Every child deserves the opportunity to become more competent and confident in their sporting techniques, but perhaps more importantly to be supported in developing a life-long commitment to their physical health and mental wellbeing. At the Suthers School we want our students to love participating and to talk passionately about sport and physical activity for the rest of their lives. To support this ambition, we have carefully crafted our curriculum to offer a breadth of sporting opportunities which develop confident individuals who have the desire to improve their performance and become more knowledgeable about sport.

We offer high quality lessons which are inclusive, engaging, challenging and knowledge-rich. We want our students to enjoy being part of a team and on a journey to personal mastery which meet the needs and intresets of the individual. Students will learn a variety of carefully sequenced skills through each sport and will develop a deeper understanding of that sport. We challenge and enable students to understand the importance of rules and skills within a sporting context but we also recognise and reflect on how this can be transferred into wider school and life settings. For example, becoming an effective team worker is an essential skill for the workplace and so too is resilience or perseverance when tasks get challenging in other subject areas .

We ignite a passion for sport through a deep understanding and connectivity between physical demanding activity and positive mental health and wellbeing. By interweaving challenege and health with our character strengths we create the ‘DNA’ of a sports performer. These key ingredients are the tools for success which will produce independent, inquisitive students who thrive on exploring their ability and habitually think about their own journey and what excellence means to them. Furthermore, we explore what respect means in sport and how it links to the wider world, this helps our students become global citizens who triumph over adversity. Moreover, we teach leadership skills and foster character through sport, making students reflect on this allows them to be humble, caring, and supportive. Knowing why they need to keep healthy will impact on their future self, hopefully sharing their experiences to benefits the wellness of others and keeping interested in being healthlthy for a lifetime.

Extra-Curricular school sport and physical activity plays an integral part to our student’s development. We offer a broad range of experiences in our enrichment programme, which aim to open doors and give exposure to activities never seen before. We compete in matches against other schools, offer trips to watch world class performers compete. These opportunities aim to provide inspiration to our students to dream big, become the leaders of tomorrow and push their personal boundaries and to challenge their limitations.

In fact, the PE curriculum has been designed to empower our students by:

Creating a culture of excellence and personal ambition

Equipping them with knowledge and understanding of PE as a discipline

Carefully and deliberately developing their physical, technical and tactical sporting skills

Teaching the expert vocabulary needed to perform and evaluate sporting activity at the highest level

Development of leadership through our Sports Leaders qualifications

Providing a robust programme of competition at local, regional and national level
